What do you do with that task that just lingers on your todo list? You could try the 4D’s. One of the those D’s is to defer it. But where and how?
Defer means you may want to do it someday.
I have a large someday/maybe list in Evernote. This is a great place to store the list. I like that I can really add a bunch of details to the list. With a good tag system you can really maximize your reference material.
Evernote allows for a lot of detail. And that detail is great most of the time.
However, I found that some tasks I just want to defer for a little while. Taking them fully out of my daily task management system seemed like an extra step that wasn’t needed.
What I do now is add them to a Someday Maybe project in Nozbe. Nozbe is my task management system of choice.
Any good project based task manager can do this.
When I have a task or potential project that I want to do but just need to defer it a couple weeks. I find that storing it In your task management system is a great way for you to defer it for a short while.
You can easily just add that task back into the workflow or even make it into to a project.
Here’s how I set it up in Nozbe:
- Step 1 – Create a project and call it Someday/Maybe list
Quick Tip – I like to put a Z in front of this project so it’s always listed at the end of my projects list. I sort my projects alphabetically. I use the client name first then I have a short project name. This way I can easily find all the projects related to a specific clients project.
- Step 2 – Move your deferred tasks to this list. You might even have a project that you want to defer. If that’s the case you can convert the task into a project.
- Step 3 – Review your list. Don’t let your list stagnate. This is a list of things you felt you wanted to do. If you don’t feel like that is the case anymore than delete them.
This sounds so simple and it is! This means you will be more likely to get it done.
Do you have a someday/maybe? How do you organize it? Tell me about it on Twitter.
